Abstract

In a Linnean tradition, Nordic Journal of Botany publishes original contributions of relevance to the botanical biodiversity on earth. All aspects of the taxonomy, evolution, conservation and biogeography of plants (including algae and bryophytes) and fungi may be treated. Contributions devoted to systematics (including phylogenetics, genetic variation within and among taxa, nomenclature and descriptions and revisions of taxa), biogeography, conservation biology and recent changes and threats to botanical diversity are welcomed. In addition, manuscripts on macro- and micro-morphology, cytology, reproductive biology and ecophysiology are welcomed provided that the findings are presented in a taxonomic, evolutionary or biogeographical context. Authors are invited to submit manuscripts on original research within these fields as well as essays on recent developments in botany.

Abstract

This book contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on the Mechanisms of Sexual Reproduction in Animals and Plants, where many plant and animal reproductive biologists gathered to discuss their recent progress in investigating the shared mechanisms and factors involved in sexual reproduction. This now is the first book that reviews recent progress in almost all fields of plant and animal fertilization. It was recently reported that the self-sterile mechanism of a hermaphroditic marine invertebrate (ascidian) is very similar to the self-incompatibility system in flowering plants. It was also found that a male factor expressed in the sperm cells of flowering plants is involved in gamete fusion not only of plants but also of animals and parasites. These discoveries have led to the consideration that the core mechanisms or factors involved in sexual reproduction may be shared by animals, plants and unicellular organisms. This valuable book is highly useful for reproductive biologists as well as for biological scientists outside this field in understanding the current progress of reproductive biology.

Abstract

Publishes papers dealing with plant structure (morphology and anatomy), plant distribution (chorology) and plant functional ecology (ecophysiology, population ecology, ecosystem ecology). Papers of mostly taxonomic nature or focussed on floristics and vegetation science will only be considered if they exceed the pure descriptive approach and have relevance interpreting plant morphology or ecology.

Abstract

This book on biological control of rice diseases deals with microorganisms and cultural practices as the non-chemical alternatives developed and used to manage devastating rice diseases such as blast, sheath blight, bacterial blight and rice tungro disease in Asia. The term, biological control has been used also to include transgenic rices which carry rice genes or others whose transient expression cause resistance to pathogens and reduce the use of chemicals. This is the first book that has been brought out to document the biological control research in rice and the application of biocontrol agents to rice. It has been developed to provide detailed accounts on the subject of biological control practised in rice over the last 30 years. However, the methodologies and merits apply to disease control in all other major crops and therefore, should be of significant interest to researchers and students of plant pathology, microbiology and crop science.

Abstract

Although statistical design is one of the oldest branches of statistics, its importance is ever increasing, especially in the face of the data flood that often faces statisticians. It is important to recognize the appropriate design, and to understand how to effectively implement it, being aware that the default settings from a computer package can easily provide an incorrect analysis. The goal of this book is to describe the principles that drive good design, paying attention to both the theoretical background and the problems arising from real experimental situations. Designs are motivated through actual experiments, ranging from the timeless agricultural randomized complete block, to microarray experiments, which naturally lead to split plot designs and balanced incomplete blocks. George Casella is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida. He is active in many aspects of statistics, having contributed to theoretical statistics in the areas of decision theory and statistical confidence, to environmental statistics, and has more recently concentrated efforts in statistical genomics. He also maintains active research interests in the theory and application of Monte Carlo and other computationally intensive methods. He is listed as an ISI "Highly Cited Researcher." In other capacities, Professor Casella has served as Theory and Methods Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1996-1999, Executive Editor of Statistical Science, 2001-2004, and Co-Editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B, 2009-2012. He has served on the Board of Mathematical Sciences of the National Research Council, 1999-2003, and many committees of both the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. Professor Casella has co-authored five textbooks: Variance Components, 1992; Theory of Point Estimation, Second Edition, 1998; Monte Carlo Statistical Methods, Second Edition, 2004; Statistical Inference, Second Edition, 2001, and Statistical Genomics of Complex Traits, 2007.
